Why Most Adults Don't Need More Exercise, They Need More Movement

When people decide it's time to get healthier, the first thing they usually think is, "I need to start exercising more." While exercise is important, that's often not the real problem. The bigger issue is that most of us simply don't move enough anymore.

Think about a typical day. You wake up, get in the car, sit at work, drive home, eat dinner, and spend the rest of the evening relaxing. Even if you make it to the gym three times a week, you're still spending most of your life in the same few positions. Over time, that lack of movement starts to show up as stiffness, nagging aches, low energy, and a body that just doesn't feel as good as it used to.

This is something we see all the time at Movement Lab. People assume they need a tougher workout when what they really need is to move more throughout the day. A short walk after lunch, getting up from your desk every hour, taking the stairs, or simply finding more opportunities to be active can have a bigger impact than most people realize. The body responds incredibly well to regular movement because that's what it was designed to do.

Exercise is important, but it isn't the entire answer. Health isn't built during one hour at the gym. It's built through the small decisions you make throughout the day. If you want to feel better, move better, and stay healthy for the long run, don't just ask yourself how often you're exercising. Ask yourself how often you're moving.
